Do I Practice SFBT On Myself as a Therapist? | The Answer May Surprise You
February 18, 2023
Welcome back to Real Talk with Elliott Connie, where I answer your questions and help you to have a better life. And today’s question comes from Danae Inman and was actually kind of seconded by someone named Haley Phillips Tennant. Then the question is, “How have you used solution focused interventions with healing your own trauma?” And then Haley said, “I love this question because it was the one I was gonna ask, too.”
You know, I’ve been asked that question a lot. Like, have you used Solution Focused Brief Therapy on yourself to create healing? And has it made a difference for you? And my answer is always the same. Yes, I have used Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and it’s made a difference in my life. And no, I have not used Solution Focused Brief Therapy on my life. And, and lemme tell you what I mean, it’s not really necessarily about using an intervention on myself, like I don’t do therapy on myself. I think that impact is when you decide to live a life that’s based upon hope, and you dedicate yourself to bringing out the very best in other people, you realize a couple of things.
And number one, no one’s life is perfect. So that means every single person has flaws, and no one’s life is perfectly imperfect. So that means everybody who is flawed also has some brilliance. And the Solution Focused Approach is about bringing out brilliance and helping people notice and be aware, more aware of their brilliance. So I think as a consequence of talking to people in this way, I’ve been able to look at myself differently, and that has healed my wounds, and that has healed my traumas, and that has made a difference in my life because I, like, there’s a, you can’t have one without the other. So as I talk to other people about what’s great about them and about them achieving their desired outcomes, about them becoming their best selves, I have accidentally started to look at myself in that way and achieved my desired outcomes and become the best version of me. And that has led towards healing. So don’t think about it as like, “Have I done solution-focused interventions on myself?” Because I think the answer to that would be no. I think think about it as when you walk through the world in this way and talk to people in this way, you have a tendency to look at yourself in a more beautiful way. And that has been priceless to me and caused a level of healing that I’m just so grateful for. So one of the reasons I’m so such an advocate for solution focused-brief therapy is that I think it heals wounds just by the way that you walk through the world. So hope that helps.
I hope that makes a difference to you. I hope that you guys can understand that in applying this and being dedicated and helping people live their lives this way, it just makes a much bigger difference. So appreciate the question. Thank you so much, and I hope I made a difference for you. Now, if you want me to answer a question for you, just leave a comment on this video. You can send me an email, you can even text me.
