2. The first is that we both have a desire to help people through our psychotherapy work. The second is we are both interested in Solution Focused Brief Therapy. \n\n My journey to becoming a psychotherapist, author and international lecturer was a long one and began about as far away from that as could be imagined. I grew up in Southeastern Massachusetts, about 20 miles outside of Boston.
As a child I was a bit of a lost cause. I struggled in school with poor grades and even worse behavior. However, that was nothing compared to the struggles I experienced in my home life. To describe my home life as turbulent would be an understatement.
I won’t bore you with the details here, but let\u2019s just say I survived it. By the time I got to college I was a shell of a human being in almost every way imaginable with low self-esteem, poor self-image and a whole slew of other undesirable traits. The only place where I experienced any sense of success was on a baseball field. I used this skill to propel me to college.
In college is where my life began to change, but of course not before a bit more turbulence. During my freshman year in college, my mother experienced a pretty major health issue and was forced to move out of Massachusetts. She chose to join her sister in Texas, and I decided to transfer schools and join her in Texas. Just didn\u2019t seem right not to be with her after all she had been through.
Then it happened. After going through all I had been through and watching my mother struggle for all of those years, I now began to worry about resilience. I wondered why some people were strengthened by tough experiences and others broken by them. Looking back, I wanted to be sure I was not broken, and it truly scared me.
This curiosity led me towards a degree in psychology and eventually graduate school to become a counselor. Like most people in this field, at that time I was being steered towards Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It just didn\u2019t fit me, I just wasn\u2019t getting it. Then when I was introduced to Solution Focused Brief Therapy it was like I\u2019d come home.
I don\u2019t mean to be hyperbolic, but as I read about this approach, I honestly felt as though someone was describing what was going on in my head. I was hooked. I went on to study closely with Linda Metcalf, Chris Iveson, Harvey Ratner, Evan George and Bill O\u2019Hanlon. I became a therapy super-nerd and lapped up every piece of information I could get my hands on. \n\n Eventually my enthusiasm led me to writing books and traveling the world teaching this approach. This happened for multiple reasons. The first is the fact I spent most of my life with people not believing in me, and not believing in myself. This drove me to become enthusiastic about this approach that is built on being optimistic about people and their ability to change.
The second is simple; I want everyone to be able to experience the strong sense of homecoming that I experienced when I was introduced to this way of working.
To accomplish my mission, I have founded The Solution Focused Universe where I host events, travel the world lecturing and often release free learning materials to help learners master this approach and use it in their work, even with the most challenging clinical situations. \n\n Thank you so much for following me in my app and reading about my journey.
